Research

Three research papers completed in 2025–26 explore Transformer attention geometry, skeleton-based action recognition and the limits of retrieval-based unlearning. Mentees work with senior research mentors to write the problem statement, review the literature and run the experiments. Every project since 2020–21 is below, year by year.

Query Expansion and Key Specialization in Transformer Attention Geometry

How query and key representations evolve during Transformer training.

Decoder-only GPT-style Transformers trained on character-level WikiText-103 show that queries and keys develop differently: query representations expand, while keys contract and become more specialized. The study compares Xavier, QK-identical and disjoint-support Xavier initialization across model depths.

Across 54 initialization-seed-depth trajectories, query participation increased in 49 cases and key participation decreased in 50. Key specialization was associated with compression of the QK interaction spectrum and reduced attention entropy. Initialization left a persistent signature even when models achieved similar validation losses.

Setup
The researchers trained GPT-style models with 4, 6 or 8 layers and representation sizes of 64, 128 or 256 dimensions, using 10% subsets of the WikiText-103 training and validation data. They compared three initialization methods to track how query and key geometry evolved.
Finding
Queries spread across more representational directions, while keys concentrated into fewer. Key specialization was associated with more focused attention, and initialization continued to influence the learned geometry.

Privacy-Preserving and Occlusion-Robust Human Action Recognition Using Adaptive Graph Convolutions

Recognizing human actions from 3D skeletons with a two-stream adaptive graph network.

This skeleton-based Human Action Recognition pipeline uses a Two-Stream Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network (2s-AGCN) with joint and bone streams. It uses 3D joint coordinates from NTU RGB+D 60 and N-UCLA, keeping RGB imagery out of inference.

The fused model reached 82.17% top-1 accuracy on NTU RGB+D 60 and 84.45% on N-UCLA. Analysis found that naive fusion could underperform the strongest stream. Three debugging rounds exposed issues in subject-level split leakage and an adaptive-graph gate; a small warm-start restored the gate’s learning mechanism. Temporal extensions, joint completion for occlusion robustness and CLIP-guided zero-shot recognition remain future work.

Setup
The researchers trained a two-stream adaptive graph network on 3D skeleton coordinates from NTU RGB+D 60 and N-UCLA. One stream learned from joint positions and the other from bones; their predictions were combined to recognize actions without RGB images at inference.
Finding
The combined model achieved 82.17% top-1 accuracy, 94.72% top-5 accuracy and a macro-F1 score of 0.822 on NTU RGB+D 60. On N-UCLA, it achieved 84.45% accuracy and a macro-F1 score of 0.844. Combining streams did not always outperform the strongest individual stream.

When Does Retrieval-Based Unlearning Actually Work? Formal Boundaries, Exact Deletion, and Holistic Cost for Retrieval-Augmented Language Models

Testing the limits of document deletion from a retrieval index.

The study tests whether deleting a document from a retrieval index removes its knowledge from a retrieval-augmented language model. Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct was evaluated across 50 topics under four corpus conditions, comparing standard index deletion with formally exact deletion.

Even with retrieval disabled, the model correctly answered 36.7% of pre-cutoff questions. After exact deletion, deleted pre-training content remained recoverable, showing that index deletion alone does not remove knowledge stored in model weights. Exact deletion took a median 0.13 ms versus 0.009 ms for weak deletion, while ranking methods traded inference cost against in-context adaptation.

Setup
The researchers evaluated a 4-bit version of Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct on 50 topics across four corpus conditions. They compared standard index deletion with formally exact deletion and tested what the model could still answer without retrieval.
Finding
Deleting a document from the retrieval index did not erase knowledge already stored in the model’s weights. Even without retrieval, the model correctly answered 36.7% of questions about pre-cutoff content.
